Refrigerator Dispenser not Working

Reasons why your Refrigerator Dispenser is not Working

There are a number of things that can cause the dispenser to stop functioning and here are some of them:

  • Dispenser Tube

This is a small plastic tube that goes from the water line to the door dispenser and then through the assembly.

Some refrigerators also have a piece on the end where the water goes into the glass.  This tube assembly can get clogged, bent or broken.  Of course, clogging is the easiest to resolve.  If it is bent, it will need some TLC to straighten.  If it is broken or won’t work, it will need replacement.

  • Water Lines

These can get clogged.  This happens if there is a problem with the water line itself like a kink.

If the tubing looks okay then something is impeding the flow of the water like a clog or something.  This can be flushed out and your water will resume.

  • Water Filter

The water filter fits into a socket and then is closed in housing.  After that it clips into the waterline.  If anything along the way is amiss, like a twist that means the water flow is uneven, there will be problems at the dispensing site.

Any of these things can also mean a leak or flooding.

If the filter was not installed correctly and the packaging cap is still on, you won’t get any water at all.

When the water filter gets too old, you will taste it in the water in addition to their being a limited amount of water coming through.

Filters should be changed every six months.  Follow the directions for your particular model of fridge exactly.

  • Water Pressure

This means there is probably a leak or clog somewhere along the line.  To find it, someone needs to track the line and test the pressure along the way.

  • Pressure Switch

This is the device that you press to fill your glass.  You won’t get any flow if there is a problem with this switch.  You will likely need a new switch.

  • Door Switch

For the dispenser to work, the fridge/freezer door must be closed.  If it is ajar, you won’t get any flow.  This is a safety feature to prevent leaks.

  • Frozen

To give you a frosty drink, the water line must go through the freezer, the ice maker, or perhaps both.  If there is ice in the waterline, it needs to be defrosted or possibly disassembled.

  • Control Board

This is the brains of the operation.  If it is even partially out of order, like ice dispensing, timers, filter lights, you will need to replace the device.

As you can tell, a malfunctioning water dispenser can have a lot of causes.  It is better to avoid tackling this yourself or you could end up with a mess, including water running onto the floor.
