This is a combination device that is composed of a pump, washer impeller, and drain impeller.
The pump forces the water out; the impeller forces it through the spray arm, and the drain impeller gets the water to the drain port.
This assembly could be clogged, or parts are not functioning as they should or are just worn.
Belt
Again, the pump assembly can be driven by a belt depending on the make and model of your dishwasher.
When your dishwasher is not draining water, these wear out or down, and can’t move the pump correctly. If that happens, the belt should be replaced.
Timer
Sometimes the timer is defective and won’t engage in draining the dishwasher. It could be you need to replace the entire timer assembly or just the motor.
Motor
The dishwasher’s motor runs everything, including the ability to drain. If it is in bad shape, you may need a replacement.
Drain Valve and/or Solenoid
If the timer works well, you must check other aspects of your dishwasher.
Your machine likely works with a valve that is controlled by a solenoid. If either one has broken down, you will need replacement parts.

- Clean the filter and trap.
- Keep spray arm holes clear of any clogs or debris.
- Check the racks for any loss of the rubber sealant. When this peels off and leaves raw metal, you can expect rust; the metal and sealant bits can clog a drain. These racks should be repaired or replaced.
- Check hose clamps to be sure they are in the right position.
- Look at the door seal to be sure it is not cracked or allowing leaks.
